The original DuckTales game was released by Capcom for the Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1989. 24 years later it is set to receive another outing as a remastered game across all the major console and PC download services (PSN, Xbox Live, eShop, and Steam).
Any marketing this game receives will surely focus on how it’s bringing a retro classic back to life. But Capcom has decided to go a step further and actually bring the original game back to life, albeit in a very limited form.
What Capcom has done is to produce 150 brand new copies of the original game on working NES cartridges and packaged them up in a, by default, very rare collector’s set. So far a lucky few game reviewers/reporters have received one in the post to help promote the game.
Capcom has gone to a lot of trouble to recreate buy Aion Accounts the working cartridges, and employed the talents of iam8bit Productions to make it happen. iam8bit didn’t just source 150 old copies of the original game. Instead, they used brand new circuit boards to load the game on to, then refurbished 150 original NES cartridge shells and produced new DuckTales labels to create the final golden cartridges. And in so doing, they’ve created a cartridge that should last as long as the originals have.
It’s unclear exactly what Capcom intends to do with all of these NES packs, but hopefully a good portion of them will be made available to gamers directly. Along with the cartridge you get a certificate of authenticity, a green cheese of longevity money off voucher, a fake duck-themed music album advert, an upcoming games flyer advertising titles from the time the original game was considered new, and a metal box to keep it all in. Even if they aren’t made available, it’s inevitable a few will turn up on ebay.
As promotions go, it’s pretty rare to see something this special produced, and that is sure to make it a very collectible item. In terms of value, it’s predicted that the pack will command similar prices to the Mega Man 9 press kit Capcom produced, which puts it at around $300.
